In this Cost-of-Living Hub, we've pulled together all of the award-winning support currently on offer to our students at BNU. There's also advice and tips to reduce your costs and manage your money more effectively.

At BNU we have a range of scholarships and bursaries to help our students through any stage of their studies. Whether you are looking to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level, are an international student, as well as those who are estranged from their families, have caring responsibilities, or are members of the Gypsy, Roma, Traveller, Showman and Boater communities. we have a range of bursaries you may be eligible for, including our Thrive bursary which offers up to £500 each year. The University and Bucks SU also pay the Real Living Wage for students they employ.

BNU is the only university in the UK to fund FREE access to a huge range of activities and opportunities to enrich your time with us, saving students up to £200 per month. We call this The Big Deal! Run by the Students’ Union, the Big Deal gives you FREE access not only to our Students’ Union’s events and entertainment, but a huge range of competitive and recreational sport; skills workshops, CV building activities and of course our societies. Since September 2022 Bucks Students’ Union have had reduced prices on meals served at The Lounge. As well as providing free hot meals, including a vegan option, on Tuesdays and Thursdays (from 5:30pm) and Sundays (from 6:30pm), to enable the BNU community to come together to share a communal dining experience in a safe, warm environment.
Pulse (Uxbridge Campus) and Basin (Aylesbury Campus) also partake in The Big Bucks Meal Deal – with Pulse giving away free breakfast twice a week and Basin serving free lunch twice a week, provided by Gather&Gather.
The SU also run ‘Monday Monthly Meals’, funded by Bucks Council. Students can sign up and pick up a fee bag of pre-measured ingredients and a meal prep guide for those ingredients. For more information and to sign up visit the .
Our main restaurant, Beeches, offers a range of international cuisines from every corner of the world at student friendly prices. There are breakfast options such as a selection of fresh pastries made on site by Gather&Gather’s specialist baker, varieties of porridge, and cooked breakfasts. Global Street Food, BNU Classics, and a Lighter on the Pocket option are also available at lunchtime.
Bucks Students’ Union have recently brought out Rusty’s Gold card, a membership reward scheme that entitles you to a 10% discount on all hot and soft drinks as well as exclusive promotions throughout the year. Some of the regular additional promotions include 15% off food in The Lounge, special deals and toppings. Rusty’s Gold card is available from £7 for six months and £12 for the year and only valid in The Lounge.
BNU also supply multiple free water fountains, providing boiling and cold water, and microwaves around our campuses for students to use.
As of March 2021, the University, in collaboration Bucks Students’ Union, has been providing free period products in all campus bathrooms - not just those allocated to female-identifying students. Research suggests that users of period products spend approximately £10 on products every month. At BNU we recognise the financial struggles our students may face and approximate this scheme could save our student community thousands each year.
We also understand that managing finances can be stressful and impact on your mental health and wellbeing. At BNU we offer a range of services to help, including our confidential and free counselling. If you feel anxious about your financial situation or it’s affecting your mental health, you can contact our counselling services.
At BNU we offer a free inter-campus bus service between High Wycombe Campus and Uxbridge Campus, so you don't need to worry about finding your own way there. All BNU students can use this service for free as long as they show their valid Buckinghamshire New University ID card and scan it as they get on the bus.
We all love a good night out, and to make sure that our students get home safely, Bucks Students’ Union provide a free night bus on a Wednesday and Friday night (the most popular nights out) for our students to be able to get home safely and quietly. After midnight the bus starts taking students home along a circular route through the most common student accommodation areas.
Rusty’s Refill Station offers students the opportunity to purchase a variety of consumables like washing detergent, rice, pasta, oats, herbs and other household essentials at a very low cost, while promoting sustainability. Rusty’s Refill Station is located at the High Wycombe SU Reception, so head over with your containers to save yourself money on essentials and help save the planet.
Also located at the SU reception, at both our High Wycombe and Uxbridge campuses, is ‘Help Your Shelf’. There are a variety of items on a bookcase which are all free and can include attack alarms, toiletries, non-academic books etc. Students can come and help themselves to any items they may need or find helpful.
As a student you may need to find yourself a part-time job to support you financially through studying. Bucks Students’ Union Jobshop advertises local part-time roles in more than retail and bar work, helping you find something relevant to you to help build your CV. They also offer certified courses, skill sessions and essential qualifications to help boost your employability

BNU also hire current students to work as Student Ambassadors. The Student Ambassador role is incredibly varied with shifts ranging from working with prospective students both on campus and in schools and colleges to representing BNU at events such as Open Days and HE fairs. You can select the shifts, allowing you to fit in work around your studies and extra-curricular activities. As a uni student, money is a big issue and Bucks Students’ Union does so much to try and ease that stress with the free club memberships, free food 3 days a week and many other free opportunities including skills workshops and fun days out! Being able to do these things without worrying about finances is amazing and has greatly helped both my physical and mental health throughout my university career.

The Big Deal played a huge part in selecting my university for study. Being able to join clubs and societies for FREE, sign me up! Through the Big Deal I joined football and Musical Theatre, where I met some amazing people and been a part of some brilliant opportunities. I have made some lifelong friends through the activities/opportunities provided from The Big Deal and have been involved in so much!
