International students: How to apply
International students: How to apply
Start your journey with Buckinghamshire New University today. Applying is quick and easy, and this page will guide you through the process for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as what to expect once your application has been received.
There are two ways to apply to study an undergraduate course with us, directly or through UCAS.
You can apply to us directly using our free online application portal. Once you have selected the course and the correct intake you are interested in, you will be taken through our application form. To complete your application, you will be required to submit some personal details, your education history, a personal statement, and details of any previous employment. You will also be prompted to upload documents that evidence some of this information; you must upload the following documents:
- A copy of the photo page of an international passport.
- Education certificates and transcripts to prove you meet our entry requirements.
- English language test certificate (if applicable).
- Two reference letters.
- Personal statement to explain your reasons for studying the course, in the UK and at BNU.
You will receive an automated acknowledgement email once your application is submitted, and within 24 hours a further email detailing your 8-digit student ID number – this should be used whenever you contact us.
Applications for full-time undergraduate courses can also be submitted through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), which allows you to apply for up to five courses/universities at once.
To apply for a course at Buckinghamshire New University, you must use Institution Code: B94, then you can select the course you wish to apply for using the UCAS Course Code - these can be found on the specific course pages of our website.
To apply via UCAS you must also pay a fee of up to £28.50 – this is paid directly to UCAS at the point at which you submit your applications. Once complete, UCAS will distribute your application to your chosen universities who will then process your application accordingly. You can track the status of your applications within the UCAS Hub. Visit the for further information.
To apply for a postgraduate course, use our free online application portal.

Application Guidance
Admissions Criteria
Some of our courses have different admission and selection criteria, such as interviews with academic staff or the requirement to submit a portfolio of your previous work. The course pages on our website outline any additional criteria you are required to meet, and we will get in touch with you via email about these once your application has been submitted.
It is important that you research the specific entry requirements for our courses to ensure you have the academic background required to succeed with us. Information about country-specific academic and English language requirements can be found on our country-specific webpages.
Writing a Strong Personal Statement
A personal statement is a unique to you and must be your own work; we do not recommend using online templates, AI software or allowing someone else to write this for you. A personal statement allows you to demonstrate your interest in BNU and the course you have applied for, as well as the skills and knowledge you already have in this area. This helps us determine whether you are a good fit for BNU.
Points to consider:
- Research BNU thoroughly (e.g., facilities and support services) and outline why you have chosen to apply to us, and any other universities you also researched.
- Research the course you have applied for (e.g., modules you will study, course-specific facilities, and teaching staff).
- Outline what you know about this subject and why you are interested (e.g., draw upon your experience of studying this subject area at school or university previously, or what you have read about the subject).
- Outline why you want to study in the UK instead of your home country, or another country.
- Outline your future career or further study ambitions. This helps us understand your motivation.
Be concise, ensure your grammar and spelling is correct, and that you have not copied someone else’s work. The personal statement informs the questions we may ask you during other stages of the application process.
Once your application is fully submitted, our Admissions team will review your application assessing whether you meet our requirements and are suitable for the course you have applied for. The outcome of your application will be one of the following:
- Conditional Offer: your application has been successful, and you can progress to the next stage.
- Rejection: your application has been unsuccessful.
- Further Information Request: we need further information before we can decide.
- An offer for an alternative course: your application has been unsuccessful for the course that you applied for, but there is another course that you are eligible for.
Your application will be unsuccessful if you do not meet the minimum academic and/or English language requirements for your chosen course. Once rejected, you cannot be reconsidered in the same intake. You may wish to apply in a future intake, but you must still meet our published requirements.
Our priority is to process a decision on your application as quickly as possible, however during peak period when we receive a high volume of applications, this can take longer. To check the status of your application, visit your application portal. Please do not contact the Admissions team as this will delay our ability to process your application.
Within 48 hours of receiving a conditional offer, you will then receive an email invitation to create your CAS Shield account. CAS Shield is our self-service online portal that allows you to track your application for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which is required to apply for a UK Student visa.
The information you are required to provide in CAS Shield depends on the course you applied for and the country you are from. Your CAS Shield portal is configured specifically to you and therefore may differ to other applicants. It is crucial that you complete the required steps within CAS Shield as quickly as possible.
Some applicants are required to take part in a credibility interview via CAS Shield as part of the admissions process. The aim of the interview is to determine that you have done suitable research into the course you have applied for, the facilities and services offered by BNU, your reasons for choosing to study in the UK, and what your plans are once you complete your course. BNU credibility interviews mirror interviews that you may have with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) as part of your visa application process, so it is important to take our interview seriously as it is a chance to practice.
If you are required to complete a BNU credibility interview, CAS Shield will ask you to pay a £1,000 interview deposit – this shows us that you are serious about your application and allows us to schedule your interview. Deposits are initiated via your CAS Shield portal, which will direct you to TransferMate, our preferred online payment platform.
If your interview is successful, you will be able to continue your CAS application and the deposit will be deducted from your tuition fees. If you are unsuccessful, your deposit will be refunded and your application withdrawn. You are not permitted to reapply to BNU in the same intake if you were unsuccessful, however you are welcome to submit a new application for a future intake.
Once you have uploaded the required documents and passed a BNU credibility interview (if applicable), we will issue your Unconditional Offer, which means you have met the conditions of admission. You must sign and return this letter to us via CAS Shield.
The final steps of your CAS application will be to pay a CAS deposit, which is usually at least 50% of your first year tuition fee (including your credibility interview deposit) – the deposit amount you are required to pay will be outlined on your Unconditional Offer letter along with your tuition fee payment plan. Depending on the country you are applying from, you will also be asked to submit financial evidence to show you have funds available to pay your remaining first-year tuition fees plus living costs, as per Student visa requirements. CAS Shield will calculate the funds you need to evidence, and will allow you to upload copies of bank statements or loan letters to prove you have the correct funds. You may also be required to submit a Tuberculosis test as part of your CAS application – this will be detailed within your CAS Shield portal.
Once you have satisfied all requirements, we will issue your CAS, which is a unique number (CAS number) that you need to use when you submit your Student Route visa application.
