Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

A Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a three-way strategic partnership that supports businesses to innovate and grow. Partly funded by Innovate UK the scheme has been supporting business-academia collaborations since 1975.

A KTP starts with the business’s vision to innovate and diversify its products or services, or develop new and improved ways of working. By collaborating with the university through a KTP, your business will access expert knowledge from our academic team, and funding from Innovate UK enables the business to recruit a highly-skilled individual who is dedicated to delivering a specific, strategic, innovation project for the business.

A typical KTP project runs for 12-36 months and Innovate UK funds up to 70% of the projects costs. KTPs are proven to have a lasting impact on the business, creating new capabilities, enhancing innovative practices and establishing new skills within the workforce.

The highlights the value and benefits that KTPs deliver for businesses and the wider economy. Some benefits from the report include:

  • Innovation in products and processes at the business including the development of new, strategically important products
  • Increased R&D at the business moving innovations along the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale
  • Increased productivity, profitability, turnover and employment at the business
  • Long lasting positive impact at the business as a result of the new skills and knowledge gained during the KTP
Thanks to the KTP with the University we secured dedicated resource to tackle a complex challenge. The combinations of knowledge from the academic supervisor at BNU and the expertise of the Associate allowed TMD to adapt and develop new processes that made sure we were ready for new technical regulations allowing us to stay ahead of our competitors when regulations came in.

KTP Case Studies at BNU

BNU Business School & Oasis Partnership KTP – £150k Management KTP

The vision for the project is to equip the charity with the capabilities required to launch, manage, and continue to develop new commercial services, to increase surplus income which will sustain and extend the services the charity provides to core clients.

A combination of formal training and active, experiential learning will equip the charity's Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Trustees with the capabilities required to develop and implement a strategic plan for income/surplus generation. Training will also enable existing and new staff to acquire the necessary expertise to develop and execute successful social marketing strategies and utilise agile management methodologies to implement and manage the planned services effectively and efficiently.

BNU Art & Design School & Serious Brands Light Engine KTP - £190k Classic KTP

The project will tune the spectral output of a light source to an individual's specific requirements making it possible to use light to help ease symptoms for individuals suffering debilitating conditions such as migraine, tinnitus and myopia. The KTP will embed capabilities in electronics, photonics, product instrumentation and APP design essential to the development of the product envisaged. The knowledge transferred will become central to the brand narrative and be embedded into the customer journey.

For the first time, fine-tuning of spectral output from a light source will be possible enabling access to the potentially profound benefits of light.
