General Entry Requirements

General Entry Requirements

Course-specific entry requirements are available on individual course pages. Applicants, agents and advisors can search for and view a list of available programmes using our course search. Please note that requirements may vary between programmes, are regularly reviewed, and may change year to year. If you are unsure whether your qualifications meet the entry requirements for your chosen course, feel free to continue to apply as we may be able to offer you an alternative.

Suitability for entry to our programmes can be demonstrated in a number of ways and is not limited to academic qualifications alone. Applicants who do not meet our published entry requirements are encouraged to contact admissions or to attend one of our Open Days to speak to a member of Admissions staff. Offer conditions will not be set higher than published entry requirements.

Undergraduate Programmes

Our typical tariff for undergraduate entry will require a score between 88 - 136 points.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for our three-year programmes, or those who do not feel fully prepared for first year entry, may be offered the four-year programme including a Foundation Year – if available. Such applicants will have typically achieved between 32 - 56 UCAS tariff points.

Postgraduate programmes

Entry to taught postgraduate programmes normally requires a minimum 2:2 Bachelors degree, but relevant experience, in some cases, can substitute for this requirement.

Additional requirements

Some programmes (eg. Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work and Operating Department Practice) require a higher tariff for entry, which can be found on the relevant course page. Applicants may also be required to undertake an interview and an additional written assessment to establish that an appropriate level of ability in English language and Mathematics has been achieved.

Entry onto our Top-up programmes requires a Level 5 qualification, such as a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Foundation Degree in a relevant subject.

If Level 2 Mathematics is required, this will be listed on the individual course page under entry requirements.

Some creative courses may require an interview, audition, or portfolio as part of the application process. Have a look at our Interview Advice page for further information on these courses.

Some courses will require enhanced DBS checks, occupational health checks and employment verification, which again will be listed on the individual course pages requirements.

Buckinghamshire New University welcomes applications from students studying a wide range of qualifications from around the world.

You can find specific details of our international qualification requirements under the ‘Your Country’ page.

Please note that we are not currently accepting applications from international students to part-time courses at postgraduate level that are taught in the UK.

To study at BNU, applicants must demonstrate they have sufficient English language ability to be able to succeed prior to their enrolment. This is typically evidenced through completion of a GCSE, Level 2, English waiver or by an equivalent programme from a majority English speaking country. Further information can be found on the website.

Any student who has studied in a non-majority English speaking country will typically be asked to complete an additional qualification testing English language ability (speaking, listening, reading & writing). BNU accepts the following English language tests:
