General election 2024 guide for students

The UK general election will take place on Thursday 4 July, and it’s your chance to have your say on who leads the country.

Did you know that 1 in every 10 people in the UK voting population is a student? Collectively, the student voice truly matters, and we encourage all eligible BNU students to exercise their democratic right and vote in the general election.  

We know summer is near and your focus is finishing those last assignments and heading off for a hard-earned break from your studies. But if you do anything this summer, head down to the polling station and vote.

We’ve pulled together this guide which includes everything you need to know about voting in the general election. Here you’ll find the ‘who, what, when and where’s – which we hope will make registering to vote and voting on election day as easy as possible for you. 

It’s not just UK citizens who are eligible to vote in the general election. Citizens of the Commonwealth and many other UK residents are eligible. .

In order to vote you must register first. If you are planning to vote in person, you need to make sure that you register at the address you’ll be living at on election day (4 July). There are also options to register for a postal vote and to vote ‘by proxy’. - it only takes 5 minutes.  

This can be your driving license or passport, or any photo ID accepted by the government. If you don’t have an accepted form of ID, you can apply for a .  

If you’ll be voting in-person, head down to your polling station between 7am-10pm and cast your vote.
