Clearing FAQs
At BNU, we recognise that everyone’s path to university is unique, and Clearing is simply another route to apply. Many students discover their perfect degree through Clearing and quickly adjust to university life. The key thing to remember is to stay calm, as We’re here to guide and support you every step of the way.
Planning ahead? There are a couple of things we’ll need from you:
- Name, phone number, email address and your UCAS personal ID number (if you have one) or application ID number
- Your qualifications (specifically subject and grades)
- The name of the course or courses you’re interested in studying (note that if successful you can only hold one offer at a time)
Clearing is another route you can use to apply for a place at university.
If you’ve missed out on your first choice university, declined any offers made to you, or are applying to university after 30 June, you’ll automatically be entered into Clearing.
However, Clearing isn’t just for those who didn’t meet their offers – it’s a valuable option for students who want to explore new opportunities. If you have exceeded the requirements of your offer, you could look to study a different course or at a different university.
So, whether you're looking to change your university choice, didn’t quite make the grades for your initial choice, reassessing your choice of course or even applying to university for the first time, Clearing could be the right choice for you.
You can use Clearing if you:
- don’t get the grades you need to get into your first or insurance choice universities
- missed the 30 June UCAS application deadline
- didn’t apply through UCAS but decide you would like to go to university
- didn’t receive any offers through UCAS or do not wish to accept the offers you have received.
Clearing officially opens on 5 July for students who have already received their exam results or are not holding any offers. It runs until 20 October. Please note that this closing date is dependent on available space left on our courses and individual courses may close to Clearing applicants earlier.
If you haven’t received your results yet, it is best to wait until you have them before using the Clearing system. However, it’s worth using this time to do your research on universities, courses that align with your career goals and your options - so that you’re ready to go on results day.
Places can fill up quickly, so you’ll want to get on the phone as soon as you get your results to see what courses are open to you with your grades. To avoid the results day rush, you can also join our Clearing Priority Club (launching soon) - sign up to request a call back at a time that suits you, making the process smoother and stress free.
Firstly, congratulations! If you’ve met or exceeded your offers then you may have heard of something called Adjustment. This is an opportunity for you to reconsider where and what to study. If you are happy with your choice of course you don’t need to do anything, but you may wish to have a look around at other courses available to you.
To change your place of study you can use the ‘decline my place’ tool on UCAS to reject your offers, you’ll then be released into Clearing and will have the opportunity to apply somewhere new.
There isn’t a vacancy list for Adjustment, so if you are interested in applying to BNU and would like to know what courses we have available, just give us a call on 0330 123 2023 to discuss your options.
If you have applied to BNU and your application has been rejected during the main UCAS cycle, unfortunately we are unable to consider an application for the same course through Clearing. However, you can apply for a different course available in Clearing, such as a lower tariff course, or your chosen course with a Foundation Year.
We are happy to provide feedback as to why your application was rejected, so you can make changes and reapply in the next UCAS cycle.
If you wish to discuss your options further, please contact a member of our Admissions team who will be happy to advise you.
Opening times will be published in Summer 2025. For the latest news on Clearing and to request a call back on results day at a time that suits you, why not sign up to our Clearing Priority Club (launching soon).
Of course! We’re running Open Days and Campus Tours for you to take a look around. These are a great opportunity for you to get a feel for what it's really like at BNU and get all your questions answered. Can’t travel to campus? Don’t worry you can also take a virtual tour.
Initially, the Clearing process was quite stressful as I searched for the university that best suited me. However, once I got in touch with Buckinghamshire New University, the process became very smooth. They provided all the information I needed, and I could reach out to them immediately with any questions.Mercy Oyebo BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy student
