Dr Nicholas Day

Biography

I secured my first full time academic post at BNU in January 2020, having completed my PhD thesis in Computer Science Education Research (CSER) in November 2019. I have been able to apply my pedagogical research and work collaboratively with colleagues and industry partners to cultivate the teaching and learning of computer programming across BNU’s Computing cluster of degree programmes. I teach modules on the fundamentals of programming, data structures and algorithms, as well as machine learning and deep learning. My continuing pedagogical research explores the impact of GenAI on teaching and learning practice in HE. I’m presently working on a project which aims to develop a chatbot, in the style of an academic tutor, to respond to questions on module material and assignments.

External to BNU, I am a Departmental Lecturer at Oxford University’s Department for Continuing Education (OUDCE), where I teach on a range of data science, computer science and artificial intelligence courses, in addition to making contributions to the department’s AI Steering Group. In January 2025, I had the privilege of working under Professor David Malan, as a tutor on Harvard University’s world-renowned introductory computer science course (CS50), delivered through the OUDCE. This course has been taken by over six million learners on edX, and has inspired and enabled many to start their careers in STEM.

Also in 2025, I was honoured to be recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), having evidenced my leadership of academic teams and the professional development of colleagues new to academia. Furthermore, I am an AdvanceHE certified External Examiner, presently reviewing Cardiff University’s postgraduate Computing degrees. I am also a Professional Member of the British Computing Society (MBCS), and will be applying to be a Fellow of the BCS (FBCS) in the 2025/26 academic year as part of my ongoing commitment to CPD.
