You’ll explore the diversity of modern computer science and software engineering, gaining the integral skills required for today’s industry workplace. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t studied computing before or if you have experience but want to solidify your knowledge with a degree. This course is designed to accommodate almost all levels of prior learning and in your second and third years, you will choose from optional modules covering a huge range of topics, from Algorithms and Data Structures to Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, and Artificial Intelligence.

Our specialisms

Buckinghamshire New University gives you the opportunity to choose your specialism for your future career after your experience of the core curriculum in year one. Rather than having to make your big decision before you join us, we introduce you to various specialisms and offer you the flexibility to choose the specialism which leads to your chosen speciality. You can choose between BSc (Hons) Computer Science and BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence

These specialisms are also offered as four-year programmes, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate programme.

What will I study? 

This course lets you learn about different aspects of computer science and software engineering. You will get the skills you need to work in the technology industry. You will not only learn in the classroom, but also work on real projects by yourself or with a team.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t studied computing before, you can join this degree whatever your level of computing experience. We are looking for students who are interested in the new technologies that will change the world. During this course you will acquire a broad range of skills covering computation theory, fundamentals of computer science, compliers and operating systems, basic programming, software development and testing, web applications and databases, algorithms and data structures, whilst building secure web and mobile applications, alongside analysing life-critical systems. From your first day and onwards, you are with us, you will be studying topics ranging from, Computer Architecture, Discrete Mathematics, User Experience (UX) and Data Science.

This degree is based on software and web technologies. You will focus on the technical side of making web apps and services. You will see how web-based computing can help different businesses and industries. The course balances theory and practice, and lets you use your knowledge in real projects. You will develop skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. You will also learn about different computing disciplines, and how to choose and use the best principles, theories, practices and technologies for different situations.

You will learn how to make systems that are dependable and reliable, using an object-oriented design approach. You will use industry standard methods, such as UML. You will also learn how to manage large-scale software projects. You will have the chance to study more about artificial intelligence, media programming, real-time systems, cloud computing and security.

You will grow and improve your learning throughout the course. You will start with the basics, such as web and mobile development, IT support, software development, programming, analysis, design and network industries. Then you will apply what you have learned to various assignments, either individually or in a team. You will also learn skills in machine learning, artificial neural networks, data analysis, fuzzy and expert systems. You will also explore other areas that relate to AI, such as mathematics, logic, philosophy, cognitive psychology, linguistics and sociology.

 

How will I be taught and assessed?

We teach in a way that is interactive and student focused. You will have lectures, tutorials, labs, seminars, and guest speakers to help you learn. We design our course to match the workplace. You will do independent study, with online support from Blackboard, our Virtual Learning platform. We will also give you reading lists and resources to help you study.

You will be assessed and graded in different ways to improve your skills and abilities. You will do practical coursework, lab tests and written exams, with the focus being on testing the practical application of the various concepts and techniques being conveyed.

What are the course entry requirements?

A typical offer will require a UCAS tariff score of: 88 - 112 (Full-time) or 32 - 56 (Foundation Year)

UCAS points can be obtained through qualifications such as A levels, T levels, BTEC or an Access to Higher Education course in a relevant subject. Please list all your qualifications on the application form as you will be asked to provide copies when we receive your application.

A minimum of two full A-levels (or equivalent) is required. Every application is considered on an individual basis.

Those with no previous study, work experience, or who do not meet the specified entry requirements, including demonstrating the necessary knowledge and understanding, are welcome to apply for the 3-year BSc (Hons) degree, however may be offered the four-year programme which includes a Foundation Year.

Following the Government’s announcement of 4 November 2024, we will be increasing our full-time undergraduate tuition fees for UK students to £9,535 per year from the start of the 2025/26 academic year. Our part-time fees for UK undergraduate students will increase to £7,145 per annum. Please visit , on the Government’s website, for more information about the changes. 

Tuition fees for Home undergraduate students (including with foundation year) may increase in subsequent years for both new and continuing students in line with an inflationary amount determined by the Government.   

Tuition fees for both new and continuing international students may be subject to an inflationary increase based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the 12-month period to 31 January each year.   

Tuition fees for postgraduate courses and CPD may be subject to an inflationary increase based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the 12-month period to 31 January each year. This increase will apply to both new and continuing students.
