This module introduces you to creative processes from initial research through to idea development stages, using art and design foundation skills at introductory levels. You’ll learn how to begin a project by first understanding and decoding a creative brief, then applying research skills to source suitable information and inspiration to generate informed ideas. You’ll develop basic research methods for fashion, costume and textile design including how to search for reference images, how to analyse and interpret contemporary visuals, and how to share this information.

You’ll learn how to design and produce a garment from concept to final realisation and will be introduced to basic pattern cutting and garment construction. Following initial visual research, you will explore mark-making, image-making and colour theory, to inspire ideas for design development. Design development will include initial paper-based experimentation, as well as textile sampling. Resolved outcomes will be applicable for use in Fashion, Costume and Textile Design.

This is an interdisciplinary module, that is shared across all Art & Design courses. In art and design, information gathering, evaluation and selection underpin understanding, ideas, and personal development. In this module you’ll research contemporary and historical cultural contexts in the field of art and design, so that they can begin to relate their own emerging practice to others' work.

This module provides you with a practical understanding of creative portfolio design and development methods, resulting in the production of a professional portfolio relevant to foundation year sector standards. It will encourage independent learning to discover individual and personal identities through portfolio creation specific to the learner’s chosen discipline.

This module provides you with an introduction to knitted textiles. The module is delivered in both the studio and workshops aiming to develop both textile specific knit technical skills and creative development skills. Emphasis is placed on the development of traditional knitted textiles both by hand and by machine with the aim of expanding your technical and creative knowledge and ability.

This module provides you with an introduction to printed textiles. The module is delivered in both the studio and workshops aiming to develop both textile specific print technical skills and creative development skills. Emphasis is placed on the development of traditional printed textiles both by hand and through digital methods with the aim of expanding your technical and creative knowledge and ability.

This module will introduce you to a range of pattern cutting and construction techniques that will enable you to learn the technical skills required to create garments for the fashion and costume sectors. Gaining an understanding of how weight, drape or composition of materials can influence your choice of construction method and enhance the style of a design.

On this module you’ll be presented with key global debates which impact our lives and could influence your creative practice and positions as creatives in ever-changing professional industries. Through research and critical reflection, you’ll explore these issues which may be related to sustainability, politics and other ecological or socio- economic factors, and respond to them creatively using your chosen discipline-specific practice.

The industry brief will provide a framework which introduces you to the wider macro and micro factors which influence product development and ways of working within their sector. This will provide you with an opportunity to extend their knowledge and awareness of the complexity of factors such as ethics and sustainability regulations, politics and social environments which will in turn influence your design practice.

This module aims to see you consider and evaluate your design practice within a professional context and further your unique personal identity. You will be guided in the development of your identity as a fashion and textile designer, highlighting your own individual style to formulate a pathway to a successful personal brand identity that will prepare you for the industry.

The Research Strategies module is designed to introduce you to preparing and planning for your practice-based report in Level 6. Through a series of thematic lectures and seminars, the module provides a framework for you to understand and explore cultural knowledge, concepts in fashion, textiles, costume design and the broader field of art and design and popular culture.

The module aims to equip you with current knowledge on issues of equality, diversity, and inclusion relevant to the creative industries. You’ll develop a sense of citizenship to help position yourself confidently and actively in your future professional roles - while also understanding the importance of identity, heritage and culture in relation to your practice. You’ll use your learnt skills to create a space for using diverse textual and visual language enabling you to build resilience and confidently present ideas in an academic and creative context.

This module will explore this business side of advertising. You’ll be asked to create a sustainable business based on a creative idea that you believe would be successful in today’s socially responsible and ecologically aware marketplace.

This module aims to allow you to practise the wide range of relevant skills necessary to take this new brand, from a business plan to the advertising campaign, resulting in a presentation showing your entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen.
