Why study at Buckinghamshire New University?
This course aims to provide you with the opportunity to:

What will I study?
We will cover areas such as:
- concepts of specialist and advanced practice in respiratory care (evidence-led practice)
- key determinants of respiratory disease (age, socioeconomic status etc.)
- application of respiratory anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and technology to the care of patients with respiratory problems
- respiratory physical assessment skills, interpretation of diagnostic tests and investigations
- assessment and management of patients with acute (acute on chronic) respiratory failure
- analysis of the holistic care of patients with acute and acute on chronic respiratory problems
- professional issues relating to respiratory care: national service frameworks, NICE guidelines, integrated care pathways, risk management, multi-disciplinary collaboration / communication

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

- critically appraise the ethical and legal dimensions of care in your respiratory environment
- demonstrate critical application of the current issues involved in caring for patients with respiratory problems with regard to local and national policies, guidelines and agendas
- demonstrate ability to perform clinical skills and competency in caring for a range of patients with acute and chronic respiratory problems
- the 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a 'Top Up' Degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Professional Practice (Respiratory Care) or the MSc Professional Practice depending on the level of study undertaken.
How will I be taught and assessed?
A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used to meet the needs of the students who are likely to have varied experiences.
These will include lectures, seminars, discussions, simulation, group work, case studies, scenarios, critical reflection, student presentations and e-learning.
There will also be an emphasis on the development of clinical skills by simulation in skills labs and in clinical practice.
Assessment will be based on a short answer exam (L6) or an OSCE (L7), completion of a Knowledge and Skills Evaluation document which will be supported by a mentor within the student's own specific area of practice (L6 and L7) and, a 2,000 word essay (L6) or a 3,000 word literature review (L7) where the student will critically analyse a respiratory topic.
At BNU, we recognise roles in this field are hands-on – that’s why you’ll take part in simulated learning experiences using our specialised facilities dedicated to nursing at our Uxbridge campus.
When will this course run?
This course runs on Tuesdays from 10am - 5pm.
