Clinical Skills for Health Care Professionals in Primary Care
- Study Mode: Part Time
- Location: High Wycombe / Uxbridge / Distance Learning
- Duration: 15 Weeks
- Start Date: September 2024
Led by our experienced and supportive staff, this module is designed for new and experienced healthcare professionals in primary care to help enhance your clinical skills.
BNU is a leading provider in continuing professional development (CPD) training.
Why study this subject?
Due to the changing climate in healthcare, the introduction of the NHS's long term plan, and the fellowship program for ‘new to practice’ professionals, many more practitioners are now required to develop a range of deeper clinical skills to enhance their management in primary care.
What will I study?
This module will consider the context of health and professional policies in relation to primary care.
You'll have the opportunity to develop a range of skills by analysing the evidence base in the general practice setting, promoting professional development through reflection on practice whilst also developing your knowledge and understanding of health issues related to primary care.
The Clinical skills for Health Care Professionals in Primary Care module forms part of the BSc (Hons) Professional Practice. The credits from this module can be used towards this honours degree qualification.
Within this module you'll gain knowledge on a wide variety of clinical skills essential to general practice nursing. These include:
- communication and consulting skills including history taking in the context of person-centred care and partnership working
- diagnostics
- record keeping
- cervical cytology and HPV testing
- National Immunisation Schedule
- travel health
- wound care
- venepuncture
- gender specific health issues.
How will I be taught and assessed?
A blended learning approach is adopted throughout the programme with teaching being delivered through practical workshops, seminars, lectures and simulations at our Uxbridge and High Wycombe campuses. Our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) will support you in accessing and interacting with online learning content and resources.
You'll take part in group work, demonstrations and tutorials and will also be expected to undertake self-directed learning.
You'll be expected to complete a competency document and a summative case study based on a patient from general practice. This will provide evidence of you implementing your learning in a general practice setting.
We'll assess you through an Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). This provides objective and consistent feedback on the practical based elements of the course.
The course takes place over a period of 15 weeks with attendance either in person or virtually.
The credits for this module can be used towards an honours degree qualification in BSc (Hons) Professional Practice.
What are the course entry requirements?
You must be a qualified, registered Nurse Associate or Health care professional and hold current professional registration on Part 1 of the Professional Register. You will also need to have evidence of having studied at Level 5. You have to be working in a General Practice for a minimum of two days per week and have access to a mentor working in this setting to support you through the programme.
