Why study this subject?
If you're a healthcare practitioner working, or in regular contact, with people who have dementia and wish to extend your practical understanding and skillset in caring for your clients/patients and their carers, then this course is for you.
Why study at Buckinghamshire New University?
Our Level 6 short course in Dementia Care and Level 7 course in in Dementia Management and Care covers the essentials of caring for patients with dementia.
It's designed to provide you with the opportunity to enhance your skills of critical enquiry, alongside the development of an understanding and critical awareness of the pathophysiology and management of the patient with dementia.
Over 15 weeks, you'll develop the knowledge to promote awareness of dementia, which in-turn will influence patient safety and team performance. This short course also enables you to evaluate the principles and practices of dementia care. Decision making will be critically analysed in relation to the management of the patient's care, including legal and ethical issues, evidence-based practice, protocols, and resource allocation.
You'll be able to apply what you learn to your own discipline and appraise the need for timely assessment and appropriate, individualised, interventions for patients with varying levels of dependency. You'll also explore your own practice and critically reflect on how patient safety, team performance, and inter-professional working can be improved.
This course meets all of the requirements of the Tier 3 Dementia Core Skills Education and Training Framework - Leadership in Dementia Care.

- assessment and diagnosis
- treatments
- MDT involvement
- patient/carers' experience and person-centred care
- support available for patients and families

- the Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding issues.
On successful completion of the module, you should be able to:

- demonstrate the application of in-depth knowledge and understanding of the neurobiological basis of dementia and link these changes to the clinical presentation of the disease
- discuss and critically analyse the key issues contributing to effective person-centred dementia care
- demonstrate appropriate patient management, promoting maximum independence and safety within the context of your own professional discipline.
