PGCert General Practice Nursing

This work-based, part-time course will help develop the knowledge and skills needed to become a confident and competent General Practice Nurse. Led by lecturers who continue to work in practice, our PGCert in General Practice Nursing is part of the Health Education England General Practice Nursing Training Programme.
Aimed at new and experienced nurses transitioning into primary care, our course empowers you to become a skilled General Practice Nurse and highly accountable member of practice teams.
Our course covers a range of clinical skills in general practice nursing, health promotion and screening, as well as the management and assessment of long-term conditions.
Led by lecturers who continue to work in practice, our course ensures that the education received is current, relevant, and informed by real-world experience.
Credits: 60 credits at Level 7.
What will I study?
On this programme, you'll be taught a range of clinical skills in general practice nursing, health promotion and screening as well as the management and assessment of long-term conditions.
Through consultation with other healthcare professionals, you'll consider issues relating to leadership and team working, accountability, quality and governance in order to develop in your role of the General Practice Nurse.
This course will cover:
- the
- women and men’s – gender health
- and travel care
- ear care
- wound management
- introduction to several long-term conditions
It also includes monitoring and management topics for:
- asthma
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- rheumatoid arthritis
- diabetes
- dementia
- cardiovascular disease
- hypertension
How will I be taught and assessed?
This course is delivered with a flexible distributed learning approach at both our Uxbridge and High Wycombe campuses, with intakes in both September and February.
The flexible delivery includes virtual / e-learning and face to face practical sessions, with practice based learning over six months.
What are the course entry requirements?
This work-based course is aimed at nurses new to General Practice. You will need to be a qualified registered nurse and hold current professional registration on Part 1 of the Professional Register. You will also need to have evidence of having studied at Level 5 or 6.
Ideally, you will be working in a general practice/primary care setting for a minimum of two days per week.
It is a pre-requisite of the course that you have access to a mentor working in this setting to support you through the programme.

Following the Government’s announcement of 4 November 2024, we will be increasing our full-time undergraduate tuition fees for UK students to £9,535 per year from the start of the 2025/26 academic year. Tuition fees for Home undergraduate students (including with foundation year) may increase in subsequent years for both new and continuing students in line with an inflationary amount determined by the Government.  
Tuition fees for both new and continuing international students may be subject to an inflationary increase based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the 12-month period to 31 January each year.  
Tuition fees for postgraduate courses and CPD may be subject to an inflationary increase based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the 12-month period to 31 January each year. This increase will apply to both new and continuing students.
