My BNU Story: BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice

My BNU Story: BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice

Why did you decide to study at BNU?

When I was working in operating theatres as a cleaner/porter/HCA, I would often meet ODPs trained through BNU and felt that they always had the upmost respect for their patients, profession, course and lecturers, so being able to work to such high standards was a goal I was willing to work towards. Also, as a mature student I was lucky that I wouldn’t need to move away from home to study as BNU is already right on my doorstep and I could keep the life I had already built for myself while studying.

What makes your course right for you?

I was already working in operating theatres around the Buckinghamshire area, so the natural progression of my career would be to start my ODP training. I was incredibly fortunate that the ODP course at BNU was the perfect ratio of theory:clinical placements and it was obvious that a lot of effort and care was taken in providing a course that suits the students as well as the hospitals involved.

What do you love most about BNU?

One thing that I have always felt is that the support, guidance and information available through BNU has always been more than enough to see me through the toughest of times. From the counselling services, to the wide network-based library functions, to the clinical tools and resources available – You can just tell that BNU is run by people who genuinely care and are always willing to go the extra mile.

What do you love most about your course?

The freedom that you are given as a BNU student is one of the points of my course that I’ll always hold close to me – From the very first day, up to graduation, and even post qualifying, you are encouraged to speak up for what you believe is right, given the tools to challenge difficult conversations in a respectable manner and be taught by lecturers who enjoy fresh opinions and staying updated with current trends.

What would you say to anyone considering study at BNU?

I couldn’t recommend studying at BNU enough – I have been a music production degree student here as well as an ODP diploma student and it’s clear that the resources, opportunities and communities available to you cover everything you need, think you may need and even never knew you needed.

What’s your BNU proud moment?

I am fortunate enough to have many moments that I can look back and be proud of during my time at BNU but one that always stands out is winning the Colin Braeside award – As a cohort we were given difficult, thought provoking topics and allocated to debate for/against the topics. Regardless if your own beliefs matched what was allocated to your team, it was an exercise in speaking up and being an advocate for patients, despite your own emotional views. The award is named after Colin Braeside - an ODP student who sadly passed away before getting the chance to finish his training.
