Carly Maguire

Biography

Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2023, I was a teacher and leader at primary schools in London and then more recently, back in my home town of High Wycombe. Prior to this I worked in the charity sector, including an organisation for adults with substance misuse issues and an advocacy service for children in care. Working for these organisations alongside volunteering with young people in various roles lead me to see the importance of education and how much a great teacher can impact the trajectory of someone’s life.

I faced challenges during my own teacher training, but the support of inspiring tutors left a lasting impact and motivated me to pursue a similar path. I went on to teach in primary schools for ten years, during which I became a Maths Subject Leader, Year Group Leader, and took an active role in staff development by mentoring trainee and early-career teachers and leading CPD sessions.

I studied for my Masters in Education at The University of Buckingham part time, whilst also working full time and training for the London Marathon in 2019! My specialist area of research for my dissertation was maths anxiety. I am also particularly interested in reading for pleasure, reflective practice, responsive teaching and the complex relationship between children, families and society.

My greatest accolade to date was travelling to Azerbaijan to present at a conference on Assessment for Learning and sharing my practice with hundreds of teachers there. My other career highlights have been seeing children I have taught progress and flourish.
