Staff Profile

Dr Barry Hill
As Professor of Nursing and Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Buckinghamshire New University, I am part of the University Executive Team, leading the strategic direction and development of the school. I line manage the school’s senior leadership group, overseeing just under 90 academic staff across the Uxbridge, High Wycombe, and Aylesbury campuses, with Oxford as a spoke site. My leadership focuses on compassionate, democratic decision-making, prioritising both student and staff experiences. I am dedicated to a research-driven, business-focused environment that balances academic excellence with operational effectiveness.
I lead research, knowledge exchange, and enterprise initiatives, ensuring that our programmes are innovative and meet the needs of the healthcare sector. Supporting staff in their professional development, particularly in doctoral and research pursuits, is a key responsibility. I also focus on improving student retention, well-being, and satisfaction, particularly in relation to the National Student Survey (NSS). By building strong partnerships with NHS Trusts and local providers, I ensure our programmes align with workforce needs, supporting student employability.
Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2024, I was Associate Professor of Nursing and Critical Care and Director of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Employability. I bring over 20 years of experience as a Registered Nurse in acute and critical care, gained at Imperial College NHS Trust. I have a strong background in developing and implementing NHS internships and working with schools, colleges, and awarding bodies to support health education and recruitment initiatives.
Throughout my career, I have been committed to improving student well-being, reducing attrition, and enhancing the student experience, particularly in relation to the NSS. I have led numerous research and enterprise projects, and I was the lead for the HEE RePAIR manifesto at Northumbria University. Over the past decade, I have generated approximately £3 million through research and enterprise activities, including NIHR and NHSE grants. I am currently involved in several UKRI bids with Buckinghamshire New University. In 2023 I was honoured to win the Times Higher Education Awards 2023 for Outstanding Support for Students.
I hold a BSc (Hons) in Critical Care Nursing, an MSc in Advanced Practice, a PG Certificate in Academic Practice, and a PhD from Northumbria University. I am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as an independent and supplementary prescriber (V300), a registered teacher, and a registered nurse (Adult).
My professional memberships include Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and I am a reviewer for the Nursing and Midwifery Peer Review Scheme (NUPRS). As the Consultant Editor for the International Journal for Advancing Practice and the Clinical Editor for the British Journal of Nursing's clinical and advanced practice series, I contribute to the strategic oversight of these journals.
