BNU celebrates more graduate success at UK Music Awards 2025

It was a night to remember for Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) at the Awards 2025 in Liverpool, as two outstanding graduates, Ola Kowalska and George Tolmie, were recognised as finalists for the prestigious Outstanding MAP Graduate Awards (OMGs). BNU has enjoyed success in previous years at the awards, and this year was no different, with George picking up the Special Mention award.

A champion for music and activism

George, a BSc (Hons) Music Technology graduate specialising in Audio Engineering, is currently making waves in the post-hardcore scene as part of the band Gender Crisis, where he actively campaigns for Trans rights.

Peter Waterman, Senior Lecturer in Audio and Music Production, who also , praised his former student’s achievements, saying: "It’s been a real privilege to watch George grow into such a confident and creative professional. His passion, resilience, and commitment – both in music and in life – have always stood out, and I couldn’t be prouder of his achievements."

Reflecting on his time at BNU, Peter said: "The encouragement I’ve received from Peter has been unreal over the time that I’ve known him, with it not being contained solely to my time at university since we exchanged social media details. Both Peter’s lectures and his character have left a lasting impact on myself & my career; gifting me the conviction and knowledge needed to tackle any audio-based issues I may face in my multiple industry job roles. My nomination for the OMG awards was unexpected but both exciting & humbling, as I never thought my work would be recognised at such a prestigious & expansive level."

Empowering artists through marketing

Ola, who graduated in 2021 with a BA (Hons) Music Business, has carved a successful career as a digital marketer at Deviate Digital, where she supports independent artists and crafts impactful marketing strategies. She was nominated for the award by Associate Professor Paul Fields, winner of UK Music Tutor of the Year 2024.

Speaking about her journey, Ola said: "I’m incredibly grateful to be nominated for the OMGs. As someone who came to the UK to chase a dream, the support I received at BNU – from Paul and the wider faculty – was truly life-changing. It went far beyond the classroom: they championed real-world experience, celebrated individuality, helped me find my voice and create a network in a new environment. Their belief in me gave me the confidence to overcome obstacles and feel like I truly belonged in this industry."

Paul Fields was thrilled to see both Ola and George making it to the finals, stating: "It is particularly rewarding to see our former students come away with awards at all post-pandemic UK Music Outstanding Graduate Awards. It is a testament to the quality of teaching and student experience at BNU, and even more a testament to the high-quality students we have enrolling on our music courses."

A legacy of success

The achievements of Ola and George add to BNU’s growing legacy of success at the UK Music Awards. Their recognition highlights not only their personal dedication but also the supportive and industry-focused environment fostered at BNU.
