Jack Rory Foley Rusbridge's story

Jack Rory Foley Rusbridge's story

Jack, who is studying the BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Foundation Year degree, recently shared with us his experience as a student coming from a non-technical background.

Originally a professional chef in London, Jack decided he wanted to peruse his interests in ‘EEE’. ‘I chose to study at BNU because they are working alongside my company in a transition scheme for young people from non-technical backgrounds enter the world of Engineering. I’ve had a longstanding interest in Tech and Computers so felt that Electrical and Electronic Engineering would be perfect.’

BNU takes a personal approach to teaching and support. Your academic teaching team get to know you and your preferred learning style.

I love that the lectures and classes feel quite personal and not overcrowded which gives you the opportunity to get to know the teacher/lecturers and really find out what areas you need to work on and can ask questions easily after or during class.

Jack went on to discuss his timetable working around his schedule with days on campus as well as personal practice days ‘I was able to get the highest grade in the Maths exam, as I am a practical learner days off were used to practice and go over things on my own is essential to my learning style.’

The foundation year option at BNU is open to all students looking to study. They are crafted to provide you with the academic skills and confidence necessary to excel at university. Jack stated ‘I think it’s a great way to open your opportunities in a new field. The foundation has brought me a new set of knowledge that has been challenging but rewarding to put in the work to learn.’

Jack’s journey has seen him show that a little determination and passion can really take you a long way. ‘6 months ago, I was doing 16-hour days in the Shard as a chef in a fancy kitchen and wouldn’t have imagined I would be now getting the top grade in a university class. I struggled in school but as an older more mature Student I now have the attitude and self-control to put in the work and excel.’
