Why study LLB (Hons) Law at BNU?

Studying an LLB (Hons) Law degree at BNU's Business and Law School is an exciting opportunity that provides you with a knowledge of the law, develops high-level transferable and applied skillsets in legal practice, advocacy and research. BNU is a student focused and employer led university, with you at the forefront of all that we do. Whether you want to be a legal practitioner, work on regulation and contracts, helping transform governance by designing policies and advocating or making an impact through politics as a champion of social change, we can help enhance your employability.

Having a degree that meets the requirements of the Solicitors Regulatory Authority, the academic stage requirements for the new, centralised external Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) and Bar council, will provide the perfect opportunity to kickstart your legal career.

We have a regular placement opportunity with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) which is open to all Law students, offering real world experience of what your working life after university might look like. This workplace experience allows you to put your studies into action and can help you stand out to employers on graduation. Additionally, short term work experience is occasionally available with local law firms.

The Law School has a dedicated moot room where you can practice your advocacy skills in a courtroom setting. We have gowns and wigs to create an authentic experience.

As well as the support from our lecturers, our Students’ Union has a Mooting Society, giving you the perfect opportunity to get involved in mock trials and pursue your passion for law outside of your timetable. It allows you to meet with likeminded students and practise court proceedings and arguing your case. You may even have the opportunity to participate in varsity and national mooting competitions.

Our law course has been specifically designed with an international and contemporary perspective. It is designed to focus on contemporary issues in law with an innovative teaching approach that underscores employability and professional skills and practice.

Not all learning is done inside of a lecture theatre. There are plenty of chances to visit magistrates’ courts to participate in bail applications, visit Parliament and law courts to experience first-hand how they operate on a day-to-day basis. You can also meet guest speakers from across the legal industry, including judges, magistrates and law firms and learn more about how you can apply your knowledge in the workplace.

Our staff cover a range of specialist topics. Course Leader Sukhninder Panesar is a leading expert in the field of Property, Trusts and Commercial law. Other expertise in the school include International Law, European Union Law, Criminal Law, International Commercial Law and Dispute Resolution.

What will I study?

You’ll cover diverse subject areas including civil and criminal human relationships and rights, legal practice and Law of Torts, as well as equity and trusts. Studying such varied topics will help you understand how law interacts with society and government. You will also  develop key skills, such as understanding complex information, attention to detail and analytical thinking which will ensure you are well placed to enter the employment market.

Our Law course embeds professional skills modules in your first and second year. This gives you the opportunity to develop a high level of legal and employability skills. It will help enhance your career opportunities and enable you to stand out from the crowd to future employers.

We are focused on providing you with all the building blocks you need to create a solid understanding of the law. During your second year, you will study the Law of Torts and property law and begin to develop your independent research skills with the research methods module. You’ll learn to apply, analyse and evaluate the principles and theories and be able to reference and apply them to contemporary situations. You will be able to choose optional modules from family and child law, employment law, and human rights and social justice.

In your final year, you’ll focus on preparing yourself for life after BNU. In addition to equity and trusts law, you will undertake an independent dissertation project on an area of law of your choice. This will help you to illustrate how you have developed a depth of understanding through a combination of critical analysis and evaluation.

You’ll be able to choose from a further range of additional optional modules. These include advocacy and alternative dispute resolution, intellectual property law, contemporary legal issues, international law, and medical law and ethics.

How will I be taught and assessed?

At Buckinghamshire New University we like to foster an interactive and student-focused teaching style. We blend lectures, seminars, one-to-one workshops, tutorial sessions, independent study and guest speakers to enhance the learning experience.

Our lecturers in the Business and Law School work hard to ensure that you learn the latest industry standard practices and knowledge. To support in the delivery of this we also welcome industry experts and professionals to deliver guest lectures who share their experience of the latest legal rulings and cases.

Seminars and workshops have been created to provide you with the chance to interact and collaborate with others. You’ll engage with the subject matter, identify legal issues and take part in discussion/formulate legal arguments.

Throughout your studies you will carry out the following assessment activities:

  • written coursework, in the form of essays, reports or client advice
  • group and individual presentations
  • role play advice (presenting a criminal bail case in court, legal debating (mooting), legal advice exhibition, mediation and negotiation)
  • written examinations.
There are field trips included in the course and I have sat in real time court cases and also participated in a mock bail application in the local magistrates court. This has also included visiting the Royal Courts and Supreme Court in London. There are networking opportunities available through frequent visits from high profile speakers and organisations.
