Why study BSc (Hons) Criminology and Forensic Studies at BNU?

Criminology and Forensic Studies is a dynamic, interdisciplinary course that explores the science behind crime and the systems in place to understand, investigate, and prevent it. Whether you see yourself working at a crime scene, in digital investigations, or shaping justice policy, this course gives you the foundation to make it happen.

What sets this course apart is its global perspective. We’ll introduce you to national and international investigative methods, laws, and policing strategies, preparing you to work not just in the UK, but across borders in an increasingly connected world.

This course can prepare you for a range of roles such as the police, national security, and prison services, either in probation or in crime prevention and policy. If you dream of working in forensics helping to solve cases and prevent crime this course is a perfect stepping stone towards that.

Our Criminology and Forensic Studies degree is designed to bring theory to life through immersive, hands-on learning in cutting-edge facilities.

Step into our fully equipped simulated crime scene, where you’ll master the art of collecting and analysing forensic evidence, from bloodstain patterns and digital footprints to fingerprint identification, you’ll develop you’re the skills you need to become a forensic expert.

Put your Expert Witness skills into practice in the Mock Court Room, where you will gain invaluable practice delivering forensic expert witness reports under scrutiny from mock defence and prosecution law lecturers, developing the key skills of forensic expert witnesses.

Experience the future of forensic science with our advanced VR system, allowing you to explore human body reactions and reaction times in realistic, interactive scenarios.

This isn’t just learning, it’s training you for a career on the frontline of crime solving, using the latest technology and methods trusted by professionals worldwide.

We believe you should have the opportunity to craft your career into exactly that – your own. That’s why we combine your first year with our BSc (Hons) Criminology and BSc (Hons) Criminology and Law cohorts. Alongside these students you’ll explore a range of topics and specialist areas like why people commit crimes, how society responds to them, and how we can reduce offending, while also diving into real-world forensic techniques used by police and investigators.

On completion of your first year, you’ll be given the opportunity to stay on this BSc Criminology and Forensic Studies degree, or switch onto another one of the Criminology courses. This is so you can specialise in a key area of criminology that aligns with your career goals.

Our Criminology courses are also offered as four-year programmes, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate programme and are available if you didn't meet the entry requirements.

What will I study?

This course takes a well-rounded and holistic approach to criminology and forensic studies, combining both specialist areas in a theoretical and hands-on approach. Criminological theories are therefore applied to potential practice scenarios throughout the degree, which you may encounter throughout the course of your career.
