Why study Strategic Organisational Management at BNU?

Your leadership and strategic skills are valuable. This course helps you convert them into a degree, recognised by civilian employers. This allows you to convert what you’ve learned in your military career into a recognisable qualification, helping you compete in the job market.

This is a ‘closed’ course, available only to people in the UK Armed Forces. This means you’ll be learning in an environment tailored exclusively for you, with peers who share your drive and professional approach to the course. This fosters a supportive learning community and allows you to confidently apply and develop your knowledge at a pace that works for you.

You’ll be taught by skilled lecturers from the School of Aviation and Security, many of whom have direct military experience. Our tutors will give you the practical, managerial, and intellectual skills that will help you to excel in a business management, aviation operations or resilience role.  We truly understand the competing demands on your time and also that sometimes no-notice commitments arise. We will work with you to find a solution and help you graduate despite everything.

You can choose to study this course over one or two years, and our fully online format allows you to study from anywhere in the world, making it ideal for those deployed or balancing service commitments. You’ll have access to our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and flexible tutoring sessions to fit around your schedule.

BNU has strong military links and is a gold member of MOD Employer Recognition Scheme and Armed Forces Covenant holder. We recognise the value that serving personnel (both regular and reservists), veterans, and military families contribute to our business and country. As a member of the UK Armed Forces, you may be eligible to receive funding for this programme under the UK Ministry of Defence Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) scheme – our ELCAS number is 1682.

I had not completed any education since secondary school so was optimistic and did not have the time or capacity to study full time along with working and family life. Studying at BNU enabled me to complete a full BA (Hons) in less than 1 year taking into account my military experience to enable me to enrol onto the course. Having all of the lessons and course content online made BNU the right choice for me.

Who is this for?

This course is designed for military personnel planning their transition into civilian careers. While your leadership experience is invaluable, many management roles require a degree—this course provides an accessible route to achieving that qualification.  It may also enhance your career aspirations in-service, especially those considering applying for a commission. So, whether you're looking to enhance your employability in the private sector or competing for promotion in the Armed Forces, this degree could unlock that next step.

If you are a veteran, you may be eligible if you enrol within five years of leaving regular service. Reservists may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

To qualify for this course, you will usually need to be a substantive Sergeant /senior rate or above. This is because we give you credit for your in-service education and experience. If you think you may qualify for entry into this Level 6 programme another way, such as prior academic attainment, please apply for APL.

What will I study?

Strategic Organisational Management offers three different pathways, that depend on your previous experience. All pathways study management and leadership modules, but each pathway has two unique modules.

Aviation is right for you if you have a background in the air and aviation ground trades. You may be interested in a follow-on career in airport operations, aviation security, or air transport management. This pathway builds on your existing knowledge to develop an in-depth understanding of the civil aviation industry, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to navigate complex operational and regulatory challenges.

You will study aviation analytics, sustainability, and ethics, helping you develop the ability to analyse key aviation trends. With a focus on strategic decision-making, this pathway ensures you will be well-equipped to enter the dynamic aviation industry, whether in civil airport management, logistics, regulatory oversight, or consultancy.

We anticipate that this route will be attractive to a very broad range of military personnel. Investigation is designed for those with experience in military policing, a wide range of security operations, or auditing and investigative roles. This pathway will help you to develop your understanding of criminal investigation systems and the role of the state in law enforcement. Building on your existing professional knowledge and experience, this programme will equip you with the skills required for careers in law enforcement, corporate security, fraud investigation, and regulatory compliance.

You will explore contemporary investigative techniques and ethical considerations, ensuring you can adapt to the evolving challenges within the policing and security sectors. Whether you aim to transition into management roles in government agencies, private security, or corporate investigation, this pathway will help you develop and develop and translate your existing expertise whilst adding credibility as you seek your first civilian role.

This pathway will refine your analytical, strategic, and decision-making skills for a career in corporate intelligence, national security, or business intelligence. You will study strategic intelligence and explore the key factors in commercial intelligence, such as marketing intelligence activities as a service, enabling you to build a career in this growing fast-growing sector.

This pathway builds on your existing technical knowledge of data analysis, risk assessment and intelligence-led decision-making, preparing you for civilian roles in consultancy, geopolitical analysis, and private-sector intelligence.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This programme is intended to link and build your capability, using previous experience and knowledge as the foundation and basis for study.

Throughout the course, we provide a high level of support both face-to-face and electronically using our Virtual Learning Environment. Our online learning platform helps you make the most of your time studying and allows you to focus on the issues relevant to your company (as well as minimising your time away from work).

Each module follows a structured learning approach:

  • One month before the module starts, pre-course study materials will be released, allowing you to prepare in advance.
  • A one-day online workshop introduces key theories and concepts, encouraging discussion and group collaboration.
  • Distance learning follows, including self-directed study, tutor support, and group interaction.
  • A second one-day workshop provides further discussion and feedback, helping you refine your understanding.
  • Additional distance learning continues before assessments are submitted.

Assessments are designed to be highly relevant and current. A mix of coursework, reports, and strategic analysis assignments, each will challenge you to research and analyse contemporary challenges and issues. Feedback is provided throughout, allowing you to reflect on your strengths and areas for improvement. There are no exams on this programme. A dedicated Personal Tutor, usually with a military background, will  support you throughout your studies.
