This module aims to equip the learner with an understanding of the basic communication skills required in health and social care settings. It will start by introducing the elements of effective communication strategies with individuals and then explore those within professional teams. Communication with service users, families, care teams/supervisors, managers and other care professionals will be examined to enhance its effectiveness in delivering quality care of the service user.

This module aims to develop learners understanding of the legal and policy frameworks and guidance that inform and mandate social care and their application to practice. The module will begin with an examination of the current UK Legal system and relevant legislation. This will then be followed by exploration of social care workers’ legal duties and powers in relation to specific service user groups with reference to case law and underpinned by ethical principles and professional values. 

The module is designed to give learners an understanding of welfare ideologies and their influence on contemporary social policy in England, focusing specifically on social care policy and policies that relate to social care. In addition, the historical development of social care in England post 1945 and current and contemporary developments will be explored in the light of welfare ideology and political philosophy. Learners will be given an overview and understanding of how policy impacts on social care organisations and agencies, social care practitioners and service users and carers. Service user and carer contributions to the teaching on the module will articulate their experiences and perspectives. 

The module is intended to provide learners with an understanding of the major theoretical approaches to social care practice, and an understanding of the phases of intervention i.e. assessment, planning, intervention and review, closure and termination of contact. The module will focus on some of the key skills linked with the phases of the process and demanded by seminal theoretical approaches to social care.

The module explores the relationships between personal identity and belonging, to specific wider definitions of community – through place, community of interest and community of need. Through investigating concepts that relate to social justice and equalities the module highlights how learners can assess the needs of specific groups and develop an anti-discriminate awareness to inform understanding and practice within a wide range of Health and Social Care settings. Using community development tools to assess need through the study of case studies and practice scenarios the learner will be able to build notions of person-centred and culturally sensitive services. Through understanding needs assessment, advocacy, and inclusive practices the learner will learn how to directly influence service user, empowerment and community engagement in services and community initiatives. These themes will all be embraced within sector care-based values, good practice guidelines and relevant Human Rights and Equalities legislation.

This module will develop skills and knowledge of collaborative working and explore the challenges of working with various professionals. It will offer the potential for self-development enable participants to challenge assumptions and think in new and innovative ways. This module will also prepare learners to engage effectively with colleagues from different occupational backgrounds with confidence and competence. 

This module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues in management of health and social services. Using contemporary examples of social care issues learners will critically analyse and discuss management and organisational theories to arrive at evidence-based rationale/s for change /change management in the care sector. Learners will also include risk, risk assessment and risk management on quality management issues as a result of change.

The aim of this module is to enable learners to develop critical knowledge and analytical skills in relation to professional practice in the Social Care sector, Professionalisation of social care occupations will give an added dimension to the debate in the changing climate of care provision. This module enables learners to understand the learning process and to give them the skills they need to plan for, monitor and reflect on their professional development drawing upon previous learning and experience and develop strategies for care management of diverse client groups. They will develop professional relationships, assess needs and risks, and contribute to the implementation of relevant policies.

The aim of this module is to contextualise the child protection and adult safeguarding agenda from both a historical and current perspective. It will explore concepts of vulnerability, risk and resilience across the lifespan from a range of theoretical perspectives. It will explore the complexities of practicing in cases with multi-disciplinary input and working with practitioners from other organisations and disciplines. 

The focus of this module is on sustainable engagement and enrichment of participants adopting targeted approaches to the deliver sport and physical activity which reflect Sport England participation and wider government agendas. The module will encourage you to adopt a ‘whole person/child’ development approach and create targeted interventions to promote sessions.

Analyse the key concepts and dominant models of practice within applied sport and performance psychology. Gain requisite knowledge required for effective service delivery within applied sport and performance psychology, when working with teams, young performers, and special populations (i.e. coaches).
