Joseph Otoo

Biography

Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in January 2024, I was working as a Registered Nurse (Adult) / Trainee Specialist Practitioner at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust from 2021 to 2023. Prior to this, however, I worked as a Registered General Nurse (RGN), Nurse Educator/Health Tutor and Occupational Health nurse for the Ghana Health Service, Ministry of Health and Kinross Chirano Gold Mines Ltd from 2005 to 2020.

I studied for my Master of Public Health – MPH, Bachelor of Education in Health Sciences (Nursing option) and Diploma in Nursing at the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast and the Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Sekondi, respectively, all in Ghana. My specialist area of interest/research are focused on elderly care especially people living with Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, nursing education and pedagogy, and health inequalities and public health policies. 

I am an associate fellow - Advance HE,  member of the Royal College of Nursing, UK, Sigma Theta Tau International – Phi Mu Chapter, UK, Parkinson’s UK, Mental Health First Aid England, Volunteer ambassador of Dementia UK, CAREFORME UK, and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH), UK.

My specialist knowledge has led me to work as a team leader / member with Ghana Health Service – Sefwi Wiawso Health Directorate and the Ministry of Health of Ghana – Sefwi Wiawso Training College on projects and programmes aimed at health education and community sensitization such as Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) in collaboration with local and international organisations such as the International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

My career highlight to date is having been a resource person for the development and implementation of curriculum for the training of middle cadre health care workers (Health care assistants) in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality, the development and implementation of respiratory and hearing protection programmes at Kinross Chirano Gold Mines Ltd, playing a key role in nursing programme development, assessment, and supervision at Sefwi Wiawso Nursing Training College, and my ongoing support as a volunteer ambassador for Dementia UK and Parkinson’s UK.
