Biography

Following a 25-year career in military intelligence, I joined the academic staff at BNU as the intelligence lead. Since then, we have built a highly experienced and capable team of experts and developed a suite of new undergraduate programmes to meet the emerging challenges of the commercial sector in an increasingly contested security environment. I also lead the 'military course' a bespoke degree programme for serving British Armed Forces personnel which builds on hard-earnt leadership, project-management and personnel management skills to qualify these graduates for impactful careers after their service.

I hold a BA (Hons) in Contemporary East European Studies from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London and an MA in Defence Studies from Kings College London. I have also passed the Joint Services Command and Staff course, which is the professional planning and command development course for British military leaders. Since leaving the Army, I have also studied land management, gaining an MSc from the Royal Agricultural University.

My main academic interest is in competing political systems, some of which I have had the privilege of experiencing close-up and at their most fragile. By developing our intelligence processing capability, which has human intellect at its core, I believe we can understand our world and develop our societies more successfully. My research interest is leadership of intelligence operations with a focus on emerging scenarios in commercial and businesses where intelligence analysis provided as a service. I am also interested in the application of established analytical techniques to modern intelligence challenges, often characterised by data-swamping and open-source analysis.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority (FHEA), Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI), a Chartered Manager (CMgr) and am also proud to have been awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2020.

I pride myself on providing a dynamic learning experience which puts the needs of the student at the heart of all activity.
