New BNU-led physiotherapy project aims to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities in Nigeria
Dr Yetunde Dairo, Associate Professor of Physiotherapy and Research Lead at Buckinghamshire New University (BNU), has begun a pioneering project aimed at improving the lives of people with learning disabilities in Nigeria.
The initiative, titled 鈥淏ringing Physical Activity to Life,鈥 seeks to promote physical activity through a unique exercise programme. The project kicked off with a stakeholder engagement at the Lagos Special Children School in Igbobi, where Dr. Dairo introduced the programme designed to address the specific challenges faced by school-aged children and adults with learning disabilities in Nigeria.

Dr Dairo said: 鈥淭he initiative focuses on boosting physical activity, improving balance and mobility, and fostering social interactions for individuals who often encounter barriers to exercise and societal inclusion.
鈥淲e are co-creating the programme with key stakeholders, including individuals with learning disabilities, their families, and local healthcare workers, ensuring the initiative reflects Nigeria鈥檚 cultural values and meets the specific needs of the community.鈥

According to Vanguard, 鈥淚n Nigeria, individuals with learning disabilities frequently lack opportunities for physical activity, which heightens their risk of health problems such as obesity and heart disease. Limited healthcare resources exacerbate these challenges, making affordable and accessible interventions essential.
鈥淓xercise has proven benefits for people with disabilities worldwide, improving fitness, motor skills, and social engagement. By tailoring a programme to Nigeria鈥檚 context, Dr. Dairo鈥檚 project offers a fun, adaptable, and sustainable way for individuals with learning disabilities to stay active and connected.鈥
Dr Yetunde Dairo is part of the leadership team in BNU's School of Health and Social Care Professions, leading the physiotherapy suite of courses. Dr Dairo is a member of the chartered society of physiotherapists and is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
