Buckinghamshire New University's Graduate Teaching Associate in Law Nasifa Ahmadi has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Her Voice International, an organisation that promotes justice, rights and dignity for women.
Her Voice International is a UK-based organisation with the aim of supporting women to have full human rights, personal autonomy and dignity. It also looks to develop long term solutions to poverty, illiteracy and gender-based violence that impacts women's lives, and their mission is to collaborate with communities to support and promote the rights of women and girls and to preserve and enhance their lives impacted by poverty and crises.
Nasifa currently visits Parliament and the House of Lords on a monthly basis to contribute to discussions about the status of girl's education and restrictions on women’s rights in Afghanistan and Ukraine, amongst other countries, and was asked to join the Board by Her Voice International CEO, Nazifa Haqpa.
Adressing her appointment, Nasifa said: “I am delighted to join the Board of Directors for her Voice International to continue to highlight the importance of awareness, action and advocacy for the issues the organisation looks to address.
“Afghanistan is facing a series of challenges—economic, humanitarian, climate-related, and political—worsened by the intensifying women’s rights crisis. Consequently, women are facing a severe rollback of their rights due to restrictions on their access to education and employment. Humanitarian crises including poverty, internal displacement and natural disasters, to name a few, are impacting the health and mental well-being of women and increasing gender-based violence against women and girls.
"Afghan women are still barred from working in NGOs, directly affecting life-saving humanitarian assistance. We know that the Taliban's actions violate international law, including multiple UN Security Council resolutions. We therefore ask the Council to send the clear and unified message that women's rights are non-negotiable, Taliban leaders are held accountable, and that the Security Council will explore targeted measures against those responsible for these grave violations."
Last year, Nasifa attended the 68th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York, where she featured as a speaker on the panel of the session, 'Understanding Barriers to Access: Language, Culture, and Reality’. She also spoke at BNU Women in Business and Law's International Women's Day conferences, speaking about her own experiences as an Afghan woman and the situation for women and girls in Afghanistan.
