This module aims to introduce you to the fundamentals of communication and representation relevant to design through drawing. The projects which learners undertake will encourage skilled technical competency as well as creative experimentation. You will develop 2D representation skills such as the principles of technical drawing as plan, section and elevation.

This practical module introduces the fundamentals of model making as relevant to the design, and development of geometric parameters of objects and spaces. It equips you with skills to understand important principles in the design and making process. It enables accuracy, perception, and analytical capacity when it comes to designed objects and prepares you for 3D design projects at Level 4.

This is an interdisciplinary module, that is shared across all Art & Design courses. In art and design, information gathering, evaluation and selection underpin understanding, ideas, and personal development. In this module you’ll research contemporary and historical cultural contexts in the field of art and design, so that they can begin to relate their own emerging practice to others' work.

This module provides you with a practical understanding of creative portfolio design and development methods, resulting in the production of a professional portfolio relevant to foundation year sector standards. It will encourage independent learning to discover individual and personal identities through portfolio creation specific to the learner’s chosen discipline.

This module introduces you to the skills and perspectives needed to research, analyse, speak and write about images, objects and designed spaces. It familiarises you with several historical and contemporary topics and issues, alongside the development of skills in research, critical analysis and communication, and interpretive strategies appropriate to studio-based art & design disciplines.

This module will introduce you to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where the basic objectives of sustainability in relation to products are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments. It will highlight the role of the design and furniture industry in minimising the impact on the natural environment.

On this module you’ll be presented with key global debates which impact our lives and could influence your creative practice and positions as creatives in ever-changing professional industries. Through research and critical reflection, you’ll explore these issues which may be related to sustainability, politics and other ecological or socio- economic factors, and respond to them creatively using your chosen discipline-specific practice.

This module extends the practical knowledge and skills required in the production of furniture. You’ll cover the design and making of aids and supports for complex components, elements of furniture that are challenging to secure and work safely using normal fastenings. It will also enable you to produce structures (rigs) that can be used to test components or several components, to ensure the longevity of their furniture designs.

This module enables you to discover and examine advanced materials and technologies for design, manufacture and production available within the furniture design industry. It provides a comprehensive understanding of traditional and modern materials employed in the making of furniture, the evolution of technologies used and the impact on production efficiencies and sustainability.

This module aims to support your employability by encouraging you to consider and evaluate your furniture design practice within a professional context, and to develop an understanding of the key considerations required to support practice. It’ll inform you about the structures and organisations which underpin professional practice within the furniture industries.

The module aims to equip you with current knowledge on issues of equality, diversity, and inclusion relevant to the creative industries. You’ll develop a sense of citizenship to help position yourself confidently and actively in your future professional roles - while also understanding the importance of identity, heritage and culture in relation to your practice. You’ll use your learnt skills to create a space for using diverse textual and visual language enabling you to build resilience and confidently present ideas in an academic and creative context.

This module will explore this business side of advertising. You’ll be asked to create a sustainable business based on a creative idea that you believe would be successful in today’s socially responsible and ecologically aware marketplace.

This module aims to allow you to practise the wide range of relevant skills necessary to take this new brand, from a business plan to the advertising campaign, resulting in a presentation showing your entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen.

On this module you’ll develop in-depth knowledge of your chosen field of practice, which will support the critical appraisal process and inform the social and professional context for your work. Furthermore, you’ll begin to develop self-promotional material and your understanding of key aspects relevant to business, such as branding, marketing, royalty agreements and invoicing.

This module aims to consolidate and extend practical knowledge that has been acquired in prior levels to extend experimentation with techniques, materials and processes to realise creative and innovative outcomes. Through independent research, aesthetics, values, concepts and the contexts of your practice will be considered from a wider perspective that extends reflection on your personal work and ways of working.

This module will enhance your understanding of the roles, relationships, and responsibilities that can play a major part in progressing and sustaining your professional practice. Extending your work in relation to career aspirations, you’ll skills to support communication within a range of business, financial and professional frameworks. Whilst being encouraged to undertake commissions and other work-related learning opportunities.

This module provides you with the support required for writing your contextual report on practice. This self-directed theoretical/critical and evaluative piece of written work consists of a detailed account of the critical references surrounding your final major project, evidencing the in-depth research conducted towards the materialisation of their project.
