My Journey at BNU and Beyond: BSc (Hons) Data Science
Before joining BNU, I had no prior experience in data science or programming, but I was eager to understand how the modern world works. At first, I was unsure whether I would struggle—English is not my first language, and I never considered myself an academic. I was also the first in my family to earn a degree, with no friends who shared my interests or background in tech. However, none of these initial fears turned out to be true.
During my time at BNU, I had the opportunity to work on exciting projects, building applications and machine learning models that deepened my technical knowledge. The course covered a wide range of fields, including cloud computing, database engineering, software development, AI, and machine learning, alongside essential professional skills like career planning and industry best practices.
A key highlight of my journey was the people—my lecturers were more than just teachers; they were passionate individuals dedicated to shaping the next generation of professionals. I always felt supported, whether it was through one-on-one guidance, dissertation mentoring (even from lecturers outside my assigned team), or simply being able to shape parts of the curriculum to better align with industry demands. The student community was also fantastic, with a strong social life and plenty of events organized by both tutors and the student union.
Despite the course being challenging, I managed to stay ahead of my assignments while balancing multiple jobs and an active social life. Graduating with a First-Class degree was a proud achievement, and I remain in touch with many of my tutors, often catching up over coffee. If I had the chance, I would happily go through the experience again.
Where I Am Now
Since graduating, I have been working in the tech industry, applying the skills I developed at BNU. My role involves solving complex data challenges, working with cutting-edge technologies, and contributing to innovative projects in data science, AI, and software development. Every day, I use the knowledge I gained at university, and I continue to grow as a professional in the field.
Looking back, BNU provided me with not just technical expertise, but also confidence, adaptability, and a strong network of mentors and peers. I am grateful for the journey and excited about what’s ahead!
