Staff Profile

Matthew Tong
Before joining Buckinghamshire New University, I was an associate lecture in business at the University of Bedfordshire and prior to this, I taught on business related programmes at Southampton and Henan University in China.
My career began as a trainee in a large department store. In my early 20s, I established my first small business and continued to do so in both Oxford and Madrid, where I lived for over twenty years.
I studied an MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Portsmouth University, hence my interest in linguistic imperialism, as English is the most powerful language in the world. For instance, to what extent does the use of English enhance or diminish the life chances of people in non-English speaking countries. I am also excited by intercultural linguistics, and cultural challenges as these encompass the speaker鈥檚 social-cultural view of the world, which is what make us all so beautifully different.
Additionally, I hold an MA in International Relations from the University of King Juan Carlos in Madrid. This course provided a Hispanic perspective to international relations that aligned with my understanding of sociolinguistics and imperialism as well as cultural and economic rights, which influence international business decisions. I am particularly interested in the economic development of indigenous peoples in Latin America and how the use of the national language in business impedes the socio-economic development of these people.
The highlight of my career was winning 鈥淭he Most Inspiring Tutor Award鈥 from the 2023 IMBA cohort. This was a moving event, as I had never been honoured in such a way before. Perhaps the key to this award is, 鈥渉e who I honour, honours me.鈥
