In 1995 I qualified as a Registered Nurse at University College Hospital in London. Following qualification, I have studied and gained qualifications in a variety of areas. I have completed courses and gained qualifications in Health and Social Care, Child Development and Palliative Care via the Open University, gained a specialist Day Surgery qualification at the University of Herts in 1997 and a Preceptorship qualification at Oxford Brookes University in 2017. I am also a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse) and Community Prescriber after achieving a 1st class Hons BSc degree in this specialism at Buckinghamshire New University in 2015.
I have been registered with the NMC since 1995 as an RGN, and as a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nurse) since 2015. Throughout my nursing career, I have worked in a variety of acute (medical, surgical, HDU, Day surgery, Medical Assessment Unit) and community (District Nursing, Health Visiting, and working in a School) settings. My most recent clinical practice post was as a School Nurse supporting and optimising the physical and emotional wellbeing of students in a school that taught over 2000 students.
Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2021, I worked for 3 years as a Course Leader and Lecturer teaching on an Access to HE (Nursing and Healthcare Professionals) course. I delivered a range of subjects and was involved in quality assurance processes and recruitment. Whilst in this role I completed a Diploma in Education and Training. I have previously worked at BNU within the Nursing and Midwifery School as a Senior Lecturer and site Programme Lead. I was involved in module leading, teaching, assessment, recruitment, and pastoral work across several programmes and now undertake occasional work in this school as an Associate Lecturer. I currently work in the Health and Social Care Professions School as a Senior Lecturer and Field Lead for SCPHN (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing) – School Nursing.
My specialist knowledge has enabled me to work with a range of professionals in both health and education. I am a member of the Access to HE Quality and Development Committee (AQDC), am secretary of NASNA (National Association of School Nurse Academics) and am a member of SAPHNA (School and Public Health Nurses Association). I am also an External Examiner for UWE (University of West of England) for their SCPHN – School Nursing programme. In 2022, I was involved in a collaborative qualitative research study exploring the barriers and enablers for progression to Health and Social Care careers for disadvantaged/under-represented students studying in Further Education (FE) Colleges. My general area of research interest is public health ethics.
