Staff Profile

Dr Christopher D. Lewis SFHEA
I am currently leading a cross-institutional initiative at Buckinghamshire New University on secondment from my role as School Director of Education in the School of Creative and Digital Industries. In this secondment, I work with senior stakeholders to drive institution-wide governance reforms, enhance academic quality oversight, and ensure regulatory compliance. My work includes supporting robust governance frameworks for external partners, implementing Priority Improvement Plans to identify and mitigate institutional risk, all aimed at strengthening our alignment with OfS subcontractual arrangement governance. Additionally, I provide strategic oversight on academic standards, risk intervention, and long-term institutional sustainability.
Beyond BNU, I serve as Chief External Examiner at Bath Spa University and Academic Consultant for the University of Hull, advising on higher education governance, regulatory compliance, and quality enhancement strategies. I have also supported multiple HEIs as an external examiner and enhancement advisor. In recognition of my expertise in academic standards and sector-wide regulation, I was appointed Lead Assessor for the Office for Students, the independent regulator of Higher Education in England.
Before joining BNU, I worked as a professional recording artist (harpsichord) on a series of acclaimed orchestral and solo recordings for Naxos Records, praised by Gramophone Magazine as 鈥減ioneering.鈥 I have held academic posts at Solent University and the University of Chester, where I was a Senior Lecturer in Music, Media, and Performance, specialising in twentieth-century musicology and modern British cultural histories. At Chester, I was also University Public Orator, writing and delivering speeches for figures including Professor Dame Sally Davies, Sir Stephen Hough CBE, and Baroness Floella Benjamin OM. Dr Gyles Brandreth described my speech writing and delivery as "reliably pitch-perfect in tone, content, and delivery."
I hold an undergraduate degree from McGill University (Canada), a master鈥檚 from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and a PhD in musicology from the University of Southampton, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the National Trust. I also hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning (PGCHE). I am a TED Speaker, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and Honorary Fellow of The Guild of Musicians & Singers.
