Staff Profile

Cheryl Cooke
Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2024, I taught at several universities in the United States, including the University of Washington Bothell, Grand Valley State University, and Seattle University. At Seattle University, my former post, I served as Track Lead for the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Psychiatric Mental Health program.
I studied for my doctorates in nursing research (PhD) and psychiatric mental health nursing practice (DNP) at the University of Washington School of Nursing. I have two specialist areas of research: 1) the effects of incarceration on individuals, families, and communities, particularly communities of Colour, and 2) emotion regulation of children in mixed racial families. These topics are interesting in separate ways. For individuals and families dealing with incarceration, we can better understand how power, racism, and intergenerational trauma can affect health and wellbeing of communities. By understanding how parents coach children in learning activities, we can explore ways that children develop their ability to regulate emotions.
I am a member of the and Advance HE.
My specialist knowledge has led me to work with adults and children with serious mental health issues, where I am licensed as a private psychiatric nurse practitioner in the United States.
I am proud to have worked in a federally qualified mental health clinic in Salem, Oregon, USA, where, with an amazing team, we sought to improve the mental health of children and their families. I am also grateful to have provided mental health treatment and therapy to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2023.
