Staff Profile

Dr Alan Hockley
Prior to joining Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) in 2002, I had a successful career in Events and Promotions, working with a range of international clients.
At BNU, I first studied for a degree in Outdoor Education and Adventure Recreation and then for a PhD in the same field, developing a particular interest in qualitative research, phenomenology and autoethnography. Following this, I taught on a number of programmes including Outdoor Education, Sports and Events, joining the Learning Development Unit in 2013. I have particular interests in recreation and health.
I have also been the academic lead for a number of specialist projects and act as an External Examiner for an MA Outdoor Education course at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
I am a member of Higher Education Academy (Fellow), a Certified Practitioner in the Association of Learning Development in Higher Education (ALDinHE) and the Learning Development in Higher Education Network (LDHEN).
A key personal achievement was walking Britain end-to-end in 2002 which sparked my interest to study Outdoor Education, so introducing me to my career in academia.
